BASILICATA – a mystical region touched by two seas
Contributed by June Clayton
Sunday, 13 January 2008

Why not take a trip this year to the sun-drenched region of Basilicata, in the south of Italy!

The region boasts some of the most impressive scenery in southern Italy ……. the spectacular lakes around Venosa, and the historic towns that dot the hillsides are so picturesque that they have been used as film sets by photographers and film directors alike, and the location for Mel Gibson’s film "The Passion of the Christ".

The city of Matera, famous for its ancient sassi (stone cliff dwellings), is pure enchantment. The whole region provides a mysterious charm.

Basilicata is a region with two distinctly separate coastlines: one facing the beautiful Tyrrhenian Sea to the south-west, and the other facing south-east, the Ionian Sea. High mountains form a dramatic backdrop to the scenery, through wooded vales to the coast where some of Italy’s finest archaeological ruins are found, amongst fine unspoilt sandy beaches

You will be fascinated by the stunning architecture and historical art of the region’s numerous small churches and medieval castles. The outdoor markets of Basilicata offer tourists a great array of unique hand made items. Small family owned restaurants offer some of the finest in southern Italian cuisine perfect for those who have a desire for spicy foods rich in flavours, spicy sausages and fresh caught game are among some of the region’s specialties. Above all,the people of Basilicata are known for their friendliness and hospitality

Todi - The Jewel in Umbria's Crown
Contributed by June Clayton
Monday, 10 December 2007

Piazza Del Popolo TodiSitting majestically on a hill perched high, deep in the heart of Umbria, you will find Todi an extraordinary medieval town. Its origins are ancient, first Etruscan then Roman and today, Todi still retains that medieval air.

Todi has many fine churches and boasts the beautiful Basilica of Santa Maria della Consolazione, one of central Italy’s best renaissance churches, based on the Greek cross and a feast for your eyes. The Piazza del Popolo is one of the finest in Italy and boasts three public palaces, one of which is a museum.

Todi Perugia UmbriaTake a short walk from the Church of San Fortunato, at the very top of the hill, and you will find a beautiful park with 360 degree vistas of the Tiber valley, surrounded by cypress and fir trees and a great place to have a picnic and find a shady corner in the hot summer sun. Todi abounds with many fine restaurants and bars and has a year long events calendar.

Summertime is a joy, with al fresco musical concerts held during August, a fine arts and antique fair throughout the year, an international hot air balloon event in July and not to mention the many festas held throughout June. During Christmastime, Todi is illuminated magically with its white lights draped from side to side of its medieval streets and even has its very own ice-rink in the piazza throughout the month of December, surrounded by Christmas trees, you can buy sweet crepes and the infamous hot chocolate from one of the nearby log cabins.

Why not take a trip, summer or winter to this beautiful town and see for yourself the delights it has to offer. See you soon ! Ciao
