TUSCANY: Arezzo Jousting of the Saracens : 5 September

Flag juggling in Arezzo Piazza Grande before the Saracen Joust

Arezzo’s Jousting of the Saracens (Giostra del Saracino) draws contestants to the historic Piazza Giorgio Vasari, competing for the coveted prize of the Golden Lance. Gallant knights on battle horses, flag-bearers, trumpeters and people in medieval costume fill the streets.

Knights score points on a shield held by a rotating puppet called the Saracen, a display requiring real riding skills and accuracy. Local churches are adorned with frescoes of 12th-century crusaders and the local population participates enthusiastically, either by watching the joust itself, or by celebrating in the streets and squares.

The historical origins of this event are shrouded in mystery, but it can be traced back at least as far as a jousting display held in 1260 to honour the knighting of a certain Hildebrand Giratasca. The puppet Saracen seems to have entered the story at a later point, but by the time the town celebrated Napoleon’s birthday in 1810 it had more or less assumed its present form.
