Umbria: Narni’s Medieval Ring Race Event – 10 May

May 3rd, 2009 | By | Category: Events
The Ring Race, Corsa all’Anello, is an ancient tradition dating back to 1371. Representing the three districts of Narni, men on horses compete by trying to run their lances through a suspended ring.
The tournament itself, on the second Sunday in May, is at the heart of two weeks of excitement and celebrations, during which the whole town dresses up and returns to the 14th century. Hundreds of townspeople grab the chance to show off in flamboyant costumes, colour-coded according to their district and their pretend social standing within medieval society.

Supporting exhibitions, shows and concerts are also staged every year and there is a solemn religious function dedicated to San Giovenale in the cathedral.
