LE MARCHE: Urbino “The Duke’s Festival” 13-16 August

Aug 7th, 2010 | By | Category: Events

The medieval-style Festa del Duca, or Duke’s Festival, takes over the squares and streets of the beautiful renaissance town of Urbino.  Knights on horseback and their ladies, musicians and poets all proudly sport impressive 15th-century period dress.

Events are focused around the Piazza Duca Federico in the city’s old quarter. Heralds and drummers heighten the medieval fever, games are played and crafts and weapons are displayed, while the public feast on dishes common during the Renaissance.

On Sunday, celebrations continue to commemorate Duke Federico da Montefeltro, who apparently speared the opponent’s eye onto his lance in a jousting duel.

Why not take some time out and explore this lovely area and I can recommend lovely accommodation at LOCANDA DELLA VALLE NUOVA which is located  in sight of Urbino itself and which is registered  in UNESCO’s World Heritage List.  The country house sits in 105 acres of an organically run farm and nestled in a landscape of gentle rolling hills , rich in wild flora and fauna, where ancient oaks are still protected as they were in the times of the Dukes of Montefeltro.
