Venice: Grande Canal Historic Regatta – 6 September

Aug 27th, 2009 | By | Category: Events

On Sunday, 6 September, all business activities come to a stop whilst Venice stages its historic Regatta.  The Grand Canal is filled with the most exquisite crafted 13th century boats and thousands of spectators line the banks of the waterway/

Celebrations begin with a board parade, headed by a vessel holding the famous bucintoro, symbol of the Serenissima. It commemorates the arrival of Caterina Cornaro, wife of the King of Cyprus, who in 1489 gave up her throne in favour of Venice. Then comes the regatta itself, consisting of four separate competitions of which the most enthralling is that of the double-oared gondolas.

Art displays in the piazza, music and more celebrations on board modern gondolas entertain before and after the races.
