Elegant, crisp, well-balanced, with lovely minerality. In the finest San Leonardo style, but this time a white wine. To be precise, a 100% Sauvignon Blanc sourced from grapes grown in the most northerly area of Trentino, whose lofty peaks inspired its name and label. “We wanted to create a white wine that could eloquently convey that rich mineral quality and striking crispness so characteristic of our growing area. That is why we selected precisely this grape variety, since it expresses itself here with such elegant fullness. It took much searching, but we were finally able to select gapes from some of the region’s most superb vineyards,” explained Marchese Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga. “The objective was to offer a rigorously genuine, pure wine, in complete accord with what has always been our philosophy.”  Vette di San Leonardo, whose inaugural vintage is 2011, comes from meticulously-tended vineyards that are 6-15 years old. The grapes are picked by hand, then undergo a brief low-temperature maceration and gentle pressing in an oxygen-free environment, followed by a 12-day fermentation in steel at 12°C. This initial production of 25,000 bottles yields a fragrant white wine in which the floral notes so classic to the grape variety are finely complemented by the complex qualities due to the wine’s Trentino terroir.

Uncorked for the first time at Vinitaly, Vette di San Leonardo immediately found great favour with aficionados of the Tenuta’s classic red wines. It is already in distribution across all of Europe, and those who wish bottles for their own cellar can find them in the best wine shops, or they can directly access www.sanleonardo.it www.facebook.com/tenutasanleonardo. The wine is priced at about 11.00-13.00 Euros and distributed in UK by FortyFive10° Ltd, London.

Tenuta San Leonardo, owned for centuries by the Marchesi Guerrieri Gonzaga family, is one of Italy’s iconic wine producers. Of its total of 300 hectares, 20 are planted to vineyard; since the 1980s they include cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot, and carmenère. The Tenuta is located in the Val Lagarina in the extreme southern part of the Trentino region, an area that boasts a mild climate, which favours a slow, balanced ripening process for the grapes and ensures the development of superb tannins. This terroir is eloquently expressed in the elegance and overall balance of the wines, qualities that are the hallmark of all of the San Leonardo wines. The portfolio includes four wines. San Leonardo, a cuvée composed of the finest estate-grown grapes, is the winery’s standard-bearer as well as one of Italy’s legendary stars, always in the top ranks in wine guides and the subject of accolades by international wine critics. It is flanked by Villa Gresti, almost 100% merlot; by Terre di San Leonardo, a blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot from the estate’s younger vineyards; and by the newly-introduced (2012) Vette di San Leonardo, a 100% sauvignon blanc sourced from other vineyards in the area.
