A personal opinion

“…..rather than hijack a subject or maybe get accused of straying from the subject….and might i now apologise for my atrocious spelling…my italian wife cannot believe i write things without checking the spelling….as in all soap box openings “i would just like to say this!” when we sell our houses or whatever to move here…in this case usualley from England we take advantage of the crazy house prices…..pocketing quite happily what the difference is between what we payed and what we now wish to sell for……it worked out better than putting money in the bank…..how is it then when we arrive in italy we expect it to be any different….if someone owns something and puts it on the market the agent tells them go for this price….much as our agent in england told us…a fishing trip…..if someone wants it bad enough they’ll pay….much as we do in england when someone offers a lower price than what we are asking you push them up as far as poss…..and who invented “gazzumping “…..why is it fair what we do and when we venture abroad to try and take advanage of lower prices and a stronger currency we get upset if we end up at that end of things……

…..being a guest here…and that is what i will always be…i must learn to bite my tounge when thing do not happen the same way as i am used to….however it is not my country and even though most italians might well be too polite to put it this way…if you dont like it dont bother coming…..in general as with most things people that write here have a true sense of apreciation and a touch of reality about the move they are planning….a small percentage seem to want to come but only on their terms…..the thing is Italy does very nicely without us….they dont need us or our money…..they dont need our culture….thye dont need us at all….but they do welcome us because hospitality to strangers is inbread within them….

….my neighbours…nearly all peasant farmers …..seem to own at least two…three or four houses….they dont want to sell them….its their heritage…maybe their children will want to come back and live….however some will put them on the market…..they might want to help a grandson or daughter buy their own house in some city…..they will value it as they wish because at the end of the day they are not in a hurry to sell….they have plenty tucked away…..the market is just not the same here…..

….as for agents….in england we pay them…they work hard….they get payed on a price which if higher they get more…we get more…whats the difference here…none…except we happen to be on the receiving end…..

….we had someone here over the last two weeks…..got tired of hearing how she had been warned about rip off agents and such….one day after she arrived she was not shown another house….why bother when all she worried about was the commision this geometra or that agent was charging…or how much the owner really wanted….she spent her two weeks twiddling thumbs …….

…my wife would say i do not tolerate fools….and i myself would say why bother….i love reading this forum…the questions are often clever the replies and the love of this country often shine thru….

….the highlands were sugested as an alternative…it just shows ignorance…the crime compared…whats the use….guns…guards….yes its all here they protect you fro criminals carrying out major crime….often there at the behest of insurance companies…but that life is almost past ….yes there are killers and shootings…in general between various gangs….but no the old lady or the young child can still walk in the street and not get scared….the parents can looose a child for five minutes without panicking…..families..five generations sometimes will all eat together sometimes every weekend….i know a neighbour…italian…spending a million euro on a new house….the ding room 140 m sq…..its for the relatives to come and eat in….the amount of money…maybe rae down here but the sentiment of family not…..

…..so my point….italy might appear poor to some but people arent…they have a higher standard of living and need less….dont read official statistics they dont apply here…nothing is done officially….they welcome you are polite and friendly….but not stupid….if they think people are coming here to cash in on cheaper prices they,ll raise them….but its still great value and life here is not valued in euro…its in quality”
