BLOG: ART and ARTISANS

Jul 23rd, 2012 | By | Category: Our Blog

Here we are in the depths of  a glorious summer that seems has lasted for ever. Hot summer days and warm summer nights under the endless sea of stars.  The landscape has turned from fields of poppies and ripening corn to fields of gold and sunflowers.

Local sagras are held every week-end providing an authentic taste of local cuisine mixed with music, dancing and fireworks

Todi, where I live and work, has had an endless array of wonderful events from flower festivals to International Hot Air Balloon Grand Prix celebrating its 24th year, to the emotive Tango festival from Argentina and now a month long of summer alfresco concerts under the stars, jazz, swing, classical.

This naturally leads on to an extraordinary art exhibition at the enchanting Castello Sismano, some 10km south of Todi.  The artist being Elisse Pogofsky Harris, a client who purchased a beautiful Palazzo in the historical centre of  Todi,2 years ago along with her husband Robert.   The joint Exhibition was titled “New Work” paintings by Elisse showing a collection of paintings of a different theme with a mix of traces of Cezanne and Chagall, whilst Robert showed an impressive display of his photographic work.

Some background on Elisse Pogofsky Harris.  Born in Chicago and attended Michigan University where she received her Degree in Art.  Her work has been strongly influenced by living and working in Rome, for 12 years.   Elisse has won many competitions and had many solo shows and has exhibited across the U.S.A. and  Europe.  Her highly acclaimed art is part of the collection of museums, corporations, universities and libraries, as well as many prestigious private collections.  It has been written of Elisse that “her metaphoric language creates a dream world where past and present emerge”   To view Elisse’s artwork,

Whilst at the wonderful exhibition, I had the great pleasure to meet and dine with Ubaldo Grazia – owner of the prestigious renaissance ceramic company based in Deruta.   Since 1200,majolica has been made in Deruta and never been interrupted to date..  The Grazia family began producing majolica in 1500 making Deruta a unique centre of production  in the world. They are committed to producing high quality majolica ceramics using the traditions passed down from each generation.  The Grazia family today takes great pride in continuing these traditions in the production of modern day masterpieces in a global market.  Their trademark superior glazing enhances the colour and the high skill of its artists to replicate time honored designs.  Testament to their ceramics, “The Economist” drew up a world classification of family run businesses which are still operating and :the U.Grazia factory was placed 13th on the list.!  Please take a look at their beautiful ceramic ware www.ubaldograzia.com
Even more exciting is the fact that Elisse Pogofsky-Harris is collaborating with Ubaldo Grazia to create her own design ceramicware!!
