February Festa and March Madness

Mar 8th, 2011 | By | Category: Our Blog

February in Italy is a wonderful time for making merry, in other words Carnival time.  So, in fact, only 4 weeks after the Christmas festivities, Italians gear themselves for a month long period of Festa and indulgence.  Carnivale is celebrated all over Italy, in towns, villages and cities and perhaps the most famously celebrated is Carnivale in Venice, with its opulent pageants and rich colourful costumes, floating along the canals, masque balls and moonlight gondola rides , historic re-enactments and music  You could believe you were on a grand stage set, a theatre in fact, with the mysterious pale masked faces, all played out before your eyes and best of all you can be part of it ! An unforgettable sight.

Here in Todi, where I live, a magnificent Medieval Carnival took place, celebrating 800 years of festa tradition.  The event was a blazon of colour and the piazza was a film-set, without any doubt.  Todi’s most beautiful piazza, plays and played centre stage for many events from medieval times and in recent times even Hollywood were drawn in where such Hollywood classics as “The Agony and the Ecstasy” and quite a few others  were played out.   The event included pied pipers, drummers, falconry, knights on horseback, maids dancing, archers, flagthrowers, falconry and one could blink only once and be transported back to the 12th century with ease.  Over 400 people were dresed in rich coloured velvet cosutme.  All to give atmoshere and credence to the event. l
